Help To Shape Global Readers!

My students need a library of 37 engaging world literature books, from "Anna Karenina" to "Cry, the Beloved Country".

This project expired on September 3, 2008.

I teach 11th grade Global history in a New York public school. My students are predominantly African American and Latino. While our high school holds its students to high standards, we have limited resources.

Our classroom has one class set of world history textbooks, but it is lacking the cozy, academic atmosphere provided by a bookcase full of interesting and relevant books. My students often tell me about the books they read at home, and ask what I'm reading outside of school. I would love to start a small classroom library in order provide students access to (free) interesting reads that cover a multitude of cultures, nations, and personal experiences.

My class needs a set of various historical fiction texts. I plan to use these to start a classroom lending library, from which students will be able to check out books for their own enjoyment and/or to better develop class projects and understanding of major class concepts. I firmly believe as my students read more, it will improve their vocabulary and critical thinking skills.

Your help will ensure that my students have the opportunity to enrich their own learning and deepen their understandings of various historical events and perspectives. These books will encourage a spirit of academia and thoughtful discussion that should be present in all classrooms.
