Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you want to help English Language Learners prepare for the SATs? Our high school is located in New York and serves immigrant students who have all learned English as a Second Language. 95% of our students qualify for free lunch and the majority of their families have incomes that are below the poverty line.

For the past five years we have partnered with a foundation that has provided our students with a supportive learning environment that includes intensive SAT prep courses, the opportunity to take practice exams and a summer institute where students meet representatives from universities to discuss college options and do mock college interviews. Additionally, our students that excelled in this program were awarded with Broadway show tickets. However, the foundation we have been working with just lost their funding this year and now our students do not have access to any SAT prep courses.

We would like to buy five SAT prep guides to help our students prepare for the SATs. Our primary objective is to use these books as a guide for a weekly after school SAT course we would like to teach. We want to expose our students to test taking strategies highlighted in the books in order to help them improve their scores and feel confident when taking the exam. One of the books would be for the guidance counselor so she can plan the SAT class lessons. The other four books would be for students to take home with them in order to do additional practice questions, take practice exams and reinforce the knowledge they learn in our SAT class. Our students generally score low on the SATs because they are all learning English as a second language. We are hoping that the strategies provided in these books will enable them to score at least 200 points higher than they did on the PSAT. Doing well on the SATs will enable them to get into college and enhance their vocabulary, math and testing skills. Therefore, these books can help our students develop intellectually, emotionally and professionally.

We would like to thank you very much for taking the time to read our request and we look forward to collaborating with you on this wonderful project that can change our students’ lives. Our students have overcome tremendous odds to get to where they are today and an SAT prep course would help them get closer to achieving their dreams.
