I teach English to hard-working, creative kids in a city public high school emphasizing art. Many of my students are reluctant or struggling readers, even though they are gifted artists or musicians. They can choreograph a dance, play a concerto, perform an aria, render a landscape, or light a show, but academics are a challenge. They have a variety of learning styles and I consider that when planning and teaching. My students don't learn their best when they are just sitting and taking notes from the board. These are kids who need interaction and creativity in their classes!

Our supplies in school are limited to chalk, pencils, looseleaf, and paper for bulletin boards and copies. That's a great start, but my students need SO MUCH MORE! My students learn best when they teach each other and when they have vivid visuals. We create graphic organizers as a group and collaborate on class-copies of notes and vocabulary to display. Unfortunately what goes on the board gets erased every day.

We really need some post-it chart paper and watercolor markers. With this sticky chart paper we can create a rotating display of notes, information, vocabulary, and student work that won't get erased! Because the post-it paper can be re-stuck, we can move our posters around or save them for use later in the year. The addition of colored markers will help us create visually engaging, clearly organized displays to help students absorb information.

You can help us create a text-rich, engaging environment for learning. With your support, my students will have tools to promote cooperative learning and sharing, and reinforce notetaking and organizational skills. This will help them be stronger readers and students as they move through high school. Thank you!
