The demands of preschool are increasing everyday. I am constantly struggling to create activities that promote age appropriate Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) with the continual pushdown of the curriculum. I teach Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) in a blended model Head Start. Students in my classroom can qualify for a space because they are either living significantly below the poverty level or have an identified developmental delay. The school district is asking us to create WORD WALLS for our preschoolers. DAP shows that preschool children should be able to begin to recognize environmental print (such as a McDonalds, Chucky Cheese or White Castle signs), their own name and about 10 individual letters, yet the school system is pushing our children to recognize sight words. I need your help to make my children a word wall and sight words that are developmentally appropriate for my students. I have started to create words with pictures next to them on magnetic sheets so that the students have a visual cue with the word they are reading. Eventually, students will learn to recognize these words at their own developmentally appropriate pace. In addition to creating words for the word wall, I plan on creating smaller words to be used on cookie trays similar to the magnetic poetry concept. For this we will need four cookie sheets. Magnetic inkjet sheets are extremely expensive and as a teacher currently attending graduate school I am having trouble financing this big idea. Please help me purchase 75 magnetic sheets which will allow me to create about 4 words for the word wall and as many as 30 small words to be used on our cookie sheets. I hope that with your help I'll be able to help my children recognize words in a way that is developmentally appropriate yet still meets the district demands for the preschool children.
