My classroom involves students with autism, ages 15-21 in an urban public school.The focus of the classroom curriculum includes vocational skill development and functional academics that are based in the school and community. The students have difficulty with social, communication, and behavioral skills. Many of the students have become proficient in using computer technology to learn and demonstrate comprehension of skills and subject matter. This mode of instruction and assessment has become an integral part of their classroom and school experience. The students need to research career options and vocational opportunities that will utilize their technological skills.

"Learning to Work and Working to Earn" is our focus this year. The technology in the classroom has provided students with a foundation of computer skills. Students have become adept at using data based and creative applications. However, the communication and sensory issues that these students with cognitive challenges have often limit their post-secondary job options. Their disabilities significantly affect site visits and job training opportunities. Through the use of technology, students will have the ability to create on-line resumes and interact with potential employers via webcam. This will enable the students with autism to compete for jobs outside the janitorial, light industrial,or food industry.

The students have worked on their skill sets for data based applications and drawing/creative writing applications. The laptop we are requesting will provide students with the opportunity to create on-line resumes and view job sites. Using the webcam feature, the students will be able to interface with job training sites and employers.

"Learning to Work, Working to Earn" will enable my students to use their current computer skills to participate in activities related to their future independence. Your help will facilitate future vocational options for these significantly challenged students.
