Tie-Dying Kindergarteners

My students need colorful cardstock to learn about the weave of fabric as well as 15 white t-shirts and a tie-dying kit to discover how fabric can be created into art.

Fabric is no longer a boring unit to teach kindergarteners! This fabric unit can be brought to life with your help! I work in a public school where students do not have the same opportunities we had growing up. I work with a fantastic population of students that come from families that struggle to stay afloat in this community. Half of my students are English Language Learners, which means that for most of them this is their first year in a setting where only English is taught and heard. With your help, I can create a colorful classroom full of vibrant kindergarteners. The best part about it is that they will be learning so much about fabrics without even noticing because they'll be having too much fun!

Working in public schooling doesn't allow for teachers to have classroom budgets that come close to what we spend on our students, if you have a budget at all. This year because of certain budget cuts, we are not able to receive any money to help educate our students. This, of course, creates a huge obstacle for first year teachers, like myself, to keep up with all classroom costs.

For this project, my students are in need of cardstock to help them create fabric of their own, by weaving the paper. In this activity, they not only learn about how fabrics are made, but they also learn how to take fabrics apart as well as use some fine motor skills with the weaving portion of the activity. Students will also be tye-dying t-shirts to learn one use of fabric...warmth, protection, and, of course, decoration!

With your help, kindergarteners will become more knowledgeable about fabric as well as colorful as they will be able to wear their finished project. Who wouldn't want to see the smile of a 5 or 6 year old when they see their finished project!
