We are an inner city sixth grade class where science is always on the back burner. I am trying to give science the 'come back' it deserves and get the children excited about it, by introducing them to dissection. Something that is in our curriculum, but never funded.
Science??? We don't even have enough books to teach basic science concepts, let alone hands-on activities that the district expects us to teach. In order to get the children excited about science and dream about other careers, besides professional ball players, they need to be introduced to an array of professions. They are a hands-on group that love taking apart small toys and would be ecstatic to be able to dissect a frog!
Hands-on, the best way to learn .... my students will be in up to their elbows! Each child in my class will be able to dissect a frog. Something that has NEVER been done in our school, by any grade level! Imagine the smiles on their faces, the possibilities ... I am hoping to get a frog for each child to dissect, as well as a dissection kit (tools) and a model for them to use as a reference. Since this is a first for our school, all dissection supplies are needed (even goggles and gloves).
With your help, the children will be able to experience only what the suburban students do. Cutting open a frog, and seeing what makes them tick, or croak. Then they can relate everything they learn about the makings of frogs to their own bodies! It will be GREAT..... maybe a few of them will decide to be the next great scientist and discover something wonderful for the whole world!! And you could make it happen!!
