When my students first saw the new rug upon entering the classroom that morning, they were so excited! They loved the colors of the rug and noted on how soft it looked, which they confirmed when they got to sit on it for the first time that day. It absolutely added an extra layer of comfort to the classroom, and it is one of the things that the students really enjoy using.\r\n\r\nOur class uses the rug every morning when we meet together for our morning meeting and SEL. We also use it during lessons, specifically during our literacy block for phonics and vocabulary instruction. For example, when we learn new spelling words for the week, the class sits on the rug and practices writing them on their mini whiteboards. It is also an option during inside recess to go on the rug and dance in front of the Promethean board, which is one of more popular activities that my students love to choose. \r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building our classroom environment and community, gathering materials that will assist in this endeavor. You have no idea how hard it is to get the simpliest of things like paper in a classroom. Our little learners coming in are just starting to write their names, don't know their letters or numbers and need practice on real paper. Almost everything we do in kindergarten from coloring pages to tracing or writing worksheets helps prepare them for 1st grade. Computers are amazing tools but they don't teach you how to hold a pencil or color using a crayon. You need good old physical paper to do that. \r\nOur community is currently in a 57 million deficit for our schools and they are cutting corners everywhere. Paper is one of them.
