Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all." - Aristotle

My students are inquisitive and have a big heart.

Many have considerable challenges in advancing their education beyond high school. They attend an inner-city school in one of the poorest communities in the state of Massachusetts, but their resilience is remarkable. Most have never traveled beyond their neighborhoods and many would be the first to attend college.

My Project

My students have been invited to attend a lecture which will be held at UMASS Amherst. Wilbert Rideau will discuss the autobiography he wrote entitled "In the Place of Justice," about his life in a Louisiana prison. I would like my students to read the autobiography before meeting the man and hearing his story. My goal is to have the lecture be more meaningful to the students attending it. Wilbert Rideau (born February 13, 1942) is a convicted killer and former death row inmate in Louisiana, as well as an author and award-winning prison journalist. Rideau was initially convicted of murder and served time in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola). He was released in 2005 after being retried and convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter. A Life magazine article in March 1993 referred to Rideau as "the most rehabilitated prisoner in America."[1] While in prison, Rideau edited a prison magazine called The Angolite. He has also written several books and compilations.

Reading this book and hearing the author speak about his personal experience will reinforce why it is important to have an education which enables us to understand the strengths and weaknesses within our system of justice.
