Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being a film actor is very different from being a theatre actor. My talented Theatre and Film students receive excellent Theater acting training and have a wonderful facility in which to learn, but they are unable to learn as much film acting and producing techniques with the one class camera we have. My students need 4 HD digital video cameras bundled with 32GB cards and tripod cases so that I can better teach the film aspect of the Theatre and Film classes.
My 200+ students are creative, generous, energetic, and diverse team players who work hard every day.
They willingly collaborate and take on challenges. Our Theatre program includes students from Special Ed, AP, and CP programs and everything in between. Many students are looking for a place where they can be themselves and be expressive. In Theatre class, they all find a home where they are accepted. They work every day to behave with honor and respect, and they also donate their time and talents to their school and community.
Our school is the oldest in our community and has been a model of academic and extracurricular excellence for over 100 years. Our 3,000 student population is extremely diverse. We have students of all nationalities, but our three largest subgroups are Latino (58%), White (23%), and African American (14%). Many of our students are living in poverty, and 57% are classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. Over 20% of our students are English Language Learners.
My Project
With the cameras I am requesting, my students will better be able to explore the "film" aspect of their Theater and Film class. Having only one classroom camera and tripod has made their film experiences more limited. With our one camera, they can learn how to slate and profile, and they can do solo recordings, one by one. However, filming even short group projects is very challenging and takes up too much class time. With 4 more cameras with tripods and memory cards, they could work on group film projects much more easily.
My students are interested in film and eager to be taught more film acting techniques to add to the theater acting techniques they already explore.
While they love to be occasionally filmed, learning real skills to make them better actors from doing group film projects would be so enriching. Many are interested in film acting, shooting, and storyboarding as possible career options, and the best way to learn those skills is to apply them while making a collaboratively filmed short project.
