Reading is BIG business! I teach first grade in low socio-economic community. Most of my students speak English as a second language. This only makes reading in English more of a challenge.My students come to first grade with no experiences. They only know local discount stores and their community. Big books are the solution. I have many big books in my classroom, however, I am unable to make them available to students. These books allow students to see the apple orchard, the farm, the ocean, etc, by bringing large, full color pictures to life. Students will be able to develop the background knowledge they need to succeed in class.You will make it possible for my students to read about different real life experiences. The pictures and text in big books are almost as good as going to the place itself. All these children need to succeed is the experience. The only way to accomplish this is by joining together. Let's teach and support the future!
