Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Lights, Camera, Sound? Storage? Abstract The project involves digital storytelling. Students will create stories using various multimedia applications (e.g. animation, audio, video, special effects, and Internet publishing). The students will publish their movies on the school website and have them showcased at the end-of-the-year program. Background This is a seventh grade Media Literacy classroom within a Title I school. I am part of the math and science magnet school. We enroll students of all ethnicities, social status, and performance levels from throughout our urban district in southern California. In the beginning, students receive some movie history and theory. They learn about camera angles and movement, lighting, sound, acting, and directing. We analyze scenes from movies and watch them over and over and over. Then, students read and examine sample movie scripts. Collaboratively, students write a script and create a storyboard. These students also have me for English, so they are well versed in the elements of a story. All team members must act in their movie to some capacity. The group chooses their crew i.e. director, cinematographer, sound manager, script supervisor, boom operator, and slate person. They film their movie. Lastly, they edit (iMovie & GarageBand) and showcase their movie. I have a degree in Media Studies (Radio, Television, and Film), and I am currently working on my master’s degree in Educational Technology. I am in the process of applying to be a Google Certified Teacher and to receive free training from Adobe. Problem We are currently working on digital storytelling projects. The most common problem with video projects is with the sound. We have a broken microphone that I have tried to fix to no avail. Plus, we have one wireless microphone that works, but leaves something to be desired with regards to quality and functionality. Needs We need two unidirectional microphones with holders to facilitate two shooting crews. Plus, three external hard drives to store all the raw footage. Finally, we need a set of notebook speakers to ensure quality playback. Goals and Outcomes The equipment will help us meet some of the visual arts and technology standards. The objective under 1.0 Artistic Perception is students will “process, analyze, and respond to sensory information through the language and skills unique to the visual arts” (California Visual Arts Standards). In addition, under the technological standard Communication and Collaboration, students will “interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media” (ISTE Technology Standards). Evaluation and Assessment The students and their projects will be assessed on a rubric. They will take an active role in creating a rubric based on examples they have explored. A sample rubric and other digital storytelling resources can be viewed at http://its.ksbe.edu/dst/. Conclusion Your support will help my students complete their movies in a realistic fashion. The project serves to address a variety of learning styles. They will learn how to go through a process and create a finished project. Each student will participate in all movie tasks. Their films will be showcased at our end of the year Magnet School program. And, possibly, my students will enter their creations into movie/video contests across the country. Thank you for your time and consideration.
