I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to Fifth Grade students at a public elementary school in Houston, Texas. My students know very little of the poets that have taken our language and shaped it into art. As a Language Arts teacher, I want them to truly see the Art in Language. Inspired by Billy Collins' 180 Project, I have tried to read a poem to my students each day just so they can start having some exposure to poetry. They love it and usually remind me when I forget or run out of time. Now they are asking for more than just the daily poem. My students need poetry anthologies that feature the works of both classic and contemporary poets. If my students have these anthologies they will have a good selection of poetry to study, discuss, recite and memorize. Hopefully, they'll be inspired to write their own poems. I want my students to see poetry as not just an isolated unit of study but something that can be read and listened to as often as they read and listen to a good book. A favorite poem that you can recite to yourself can produce the same feeling as a favorite song heard on the radio. I want to offer this to my students.
