Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love science! They love to use their creativity to draw the different animals and dinosaurs that they are learning about. I'd love to take their creativity one step farther and provide them with Lego bricks and books with building ideas so they can create amazing 3 dimensional models.
My students are wonderful second graders.
Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college.
My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream autistic and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom.
My Project
My students are very creative and they love science! These Lego sets and building idea books will be used to create amazing projects in my classroom that will be part of our science and Language Arts curriculum. My students will study animal life cycles, animal camouflage, and dinosaurs this year.
As part of these thematic units, I plan on letting my students look at the Lego idea books and then giving them a variety of Lego bricks to allow them to create 3 dimensional models of their favorite animal or dinosaur. The students will be working in small groups to create their models.
This will allow my students to practice working cooperatively and using communication skills to share ideas. These Lego books and supplies will enrich my science and literature units.
One of the best things about these resources is that they will be able to be used every year so hundreds of my future students will also benefit from this project.
This project will allow my students to use the information they are learning in science and Language Arts to create amazing art projects.
It will enable my students to go beyond just reading the material in their books. These supplies will enrich my curriculum and allow my students to use their creativity and become excited about what they are learning! I want this project to help inspire my student's imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in STEM.
