it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember walking into a class and being told what you have to read and wanting to cry? My high school students are stuck in a reading class and want to read interesting books. These books will help me give them the joy of reading.
I teach 10th grade in a low income school.
Many of my students are on low reading levels and have never finished a book. They are not able to find high interest books in school and therefore do not read. My students want so much to have books in our classroom that would interest them. There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when you finish your first book.
My Project
Many of my student are on a 3rd to 5th grade level. My job is to get them to a 10th grade level in time to take our state test at the end of the year. The best way to get them there is to have them read. The problem is that they hate to read. With these high interest books my students will want to come to class and enjoy reading. The other issue is many of my class sets are more for girls. My boys are asking for books they can relate to.
These books have been flying off the shelf.
Our school only has one copy and the waiting list is all the way to the end of the year. I have never seen low level students so excited to read. By having these in my classroom I will be able to give the joy of reading to all my students. My boys will have books that are geared toward them. After they will do a book report and hang them around the room.
