Building Brains: STEM Morning Activities for First Grade

Help me give my students activities like playstix will give students an opportunity to play with purpose. First graders are naturally curious. They want to touch, build, take apart, try again, and figure out how things work.

My Project

Every morning, our first grade students arrive ready to learn, but they don't all arrive ready to learn in the same way. Some students need a few quiet minutes to settle in, while others are eager to build, create, talk, and explore.

We would love to provide our students with a collection of hands-on STEM activities that give free choice a little structure.

Instead of beginning each morning with a worksheet, students will be able to choose from building materials, engineering challenges, puzzles, and creative construction activities. They might design a bridge, build a tower, create a structure that can hold weight, solve a building challenge, or simply experiment with materials and see what they can make.

These activities will help students practice important skills before the academic day even begins:

Problem-solving – What can I change when my design doesn't work?

Creativity – What can I create using these materials?

Collaboration – Can I work with a classmate and share ideas?

Communication – How can I explain my thinking?

Persistence – What can I try when my first idea doesn't work?

Fine-motor skills – How can I manipulate, connect, stack, and construct?

Early STEM thinking – How can I plan, test, observe, and improve?

Most importantly, these activities will give our students an opportunity to play with purpose.

First graders are naturally curious. They want to touch, build, take apart, try again, and figure out how things work. By providing accessible STEM materials and simple challenges, we can turn that natural curiosity into meaningful learning while creating a calm and welcoming start to the school day.
