My Project

My students are unique, hardworking learners who thrive when they have a supportive environment that meets both their academic and sensory needs. They enjoy having opportunities to make choices, explore books, and take breaks when they feel overwhelmed. Creating a welcoming reading nook within our calm-down area will give them a comfortable space where literacy and self-regulation can come together.

This reading nook will be more than just a place to read—it will be a safe space to reset, recharge, and return ready to learn.

The comfortable seating, book storage, shelving, and calming materials will help create an organized and inviting area where students can independently choose a book, enjoy quiet reading, or use appropriate strategies to regulate their emotions.

My goal is to create a space that encourages a love of reading while supporting independence, communication, and emotional regulation. With these resources, my students will have a special place in our classroom where they can find comfort, build literacy skills, and prepare themselves to successfully rejoin learning.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
