Comfortable Connections: Creating a Welcoming Counseling Space

Help me give my students a black loveseat, four comfortable meeting chairs, and a flexible mobile desk to create a welcoming counseling space for individual support, family conferences, small-group meetings, and meaningful conversations.

My Project

My students are caring, resilient, and full of potential, and they deserve a counseling space where they feel safe, comfortable, and supported. As their school counselor, I meet with students individually, in small groups, and alongside their parents and families. Some conversations involve problem-solving, emotions, behavior, attendance, peer concerns, or other challenges that can be difficult to discuss. I want students and families to walk into my office and immediately feel that they have a calm, welcoming place where they can sit down, talk openly, and know they are supported.

The loveseat, four meeting chairs, and mobile desk will transform this space into a flexible area for counseling, family conferences, small-group meetings, and student support.

The loveseat will provide comfortable seating for a student and parent, siblings, or students who need a calmer place to talk. The four chairs will give families and small groups appropriate seating around the meeting table instead of relying on mismatched classroom chairs. The mobile desk will provide a surface for paperwork, goal-setting, counseling activities, resources, and parent conferences, while allowing me to rearrange the room depending on the needs of each meeting.

My goal is to create a counseling environment that feels organized, respectful, and welcoming to every student and family who enters. When students feel comfortable enough to communicate honestly, work through concerns, and build trusting relationships with the adults supporting them, they are better prepared to return to class, focus on learning, and experience success at school.
