This will be my fourth year teaching early childhood special education, but my first at Brunson School in Chicago’s Austin community. I will be working in a “blended” Head Start classroom where I will be team teaching a group of 34 preschool students in two half-day programs. Children must meet eligibility requirements to enter the program, either they have an identified developmental disability or they are living significantly below the poverty level. Both of these factors are considered “risks” for future academic failure. I firmly believe with the proper early academic interventions, all children can learn and be successful academically, which will in turn make them productive members of society. One of the most beloved areas in any early childhood classroom is the “housekeeping/dramatic play” area. As I surveyed my new classroom today, I realized that they had beautiful “kitchen” furniture but as hard as I looked to uncover the food, all I found were a few pieces of food that have received a lot of wear and tear over the last few years. I am requesting many varieties of foods for our dramatic play area. I am a firm believer in the fact that young children learn best through play. With the addition of new food, we will be able to discuss healthy and non-healthy food choices. As an obesity epidemic takes over our country, I believe that teaching children about healthy choices when they are young is very important. In addition to healthy eating habits, the dramatic play area is a place where children can “try-out” adult roles. As a special education teacher, I love watching my shy children “come alive” in the dramatic play area. It is a place where they can role-play and replay activities that are familiar to them and increase their vocabulary at their own pace. Please help us stock our refrigerator with food that will get us cooking and keep us talking!
