Help me give my students engaging prizes and incentives to spark excitement for weekly literacy activities, monthly reading challenges, and meaningful participation in our school library.

My Project

My high school students are curious, creative, funny, and full of different interests. Some are enthusiastic readers who visit the library regularly, while others are still searching for the book, genre, or experience that will make reading click. I love seeing students discover something in the library that captures their attention and then share that excitement with their friends.

I want to give every student a reason to see the library as a place where they belong.

With this project, I will create monthly themed literacy contests along with weekly challenges and instant-win activities throughout the first semester. Students might answer book trivia, solve a literary riddle, complete a scavenger hunt, recommend a book, participate in reading bingo, or find a hidden “golden ticket” while exploring the shelves.

The snacks, candy, stickers, bookmarks, pens, notebooks, and other small prizes will provide fun, immediate incentives for participation. Larger prizes will help generate excitement for our monthly reading and literacy challenges. Contest materials will allow me to create new interactive experiences throughout the semester.

These resources aren't just prizes—they are tools for creating connections. A student may come to the library hoping to win a piece of candy but leave with a book. Another may discover a new section while searching for a golden ticket. A reluctant reader may enter a contest with friends and discover a genre they enjoy.

The prizes get their attention; the library gives us the opportunity to make a connection.

My goal is to build a library culture where reading, curiosity, creativity, and participation are celebrated—and where students are excited to ask, “What’s happening in the library this week?”
