Help me give my students an engaging, hands-on outdoor learning space where they can explore art, geography, culture, language, movement, and global awareness while creating something meaningful for their entire school community.

My Project

We are transforming an ordinary school blacktop into a vibrant, interactive outdoor classroom where art, geography, movement, language, culture, and global awareness come together!

Our fifth-grade dual-language students will work collaboratively with their art teacher and classroom teacher to design and paint a large-scale mural featuring a map of the United States, the seven continents, geographic landmarks, bilingual English/Spanish vocabulary, and interactive learning activities.

The blacktop will include activities such as hopscotch, Four Square, a giant compass rose, and movement paths. Students will be able to physically explore geography while practicing academic vocabulary, problem-solving, movement, and collaboration.

Students will research different regions and cultures and thoughtfully incorporate landmarks, geographic features, artistic traditions, and cultural contributions into their designs. As a dual-language class, students will also incorporate English and Spanish throughout the project, celebrating multilingualism as an important part of our school community.

Most importantly, our students will be the artists and creators. They will research, sketch, plan, collaborate, problem-solve, and ultimately paint the final design. Their work will transform a plain blacktop into a colorful learning environment that they can be proud of and that future students can enjoy.

This project goes beyond creating a beautiful mural. It will provide a lasting, schoolwide learning resource that can be used during recess, physical education, art, classroom instruction, and outdoor learning. Students will learn that art can be interactive, that geography can be experienced through movement, and that our differences, languages, and cultures make our community stronger.
