Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their resilience, individuality, and determination to keep moving forward even when they face challenges outside of the classroom. Our teen girls are intelligent, creative, compassionate, and full of potential. They are discovering who they are while navigating the many academic, social, and personal challenges that come with being a teenager.

As educators, we know that students cannot always focus on learning when they are worried about meeting a basic personal need.

Something as simple as not having deodorant, menstrual products, or other personal care essentials can create embarrassment, anxiety, discomfort, or even cause a student to miss valuable instructional time.

When students feel clean, comfortable, prepared, and confident, they are better positioned to concentrate on instruction and engage with their peers and teachers.

Menstrual products can help students manage their periods without having to worry about being unprepared during the school day. Deodorant, body wipes, oral-care supplies, and other hygiene items can help students feel more comfortable and confident interacting with others. A small personal care kit can provide peace of mind and help eliminate one more obstacle between a student and her education.

Most importantly, these kits send a powerful message:

You matter. You are worthy of being cared for. Your education matters.

I want every young woman who receives a Girl Power Care Kit to know that needing assistance does not diminish her dignity. Instead, our school community is here to support her as she grows into the confident, capable young woman she is becoming.
