Seeing Biology Up Close: Microscopes for Hands-On Science

Help me give my students the tools to explore the microscopic world through hands-on investigation and discovery.

My Project

My biology students are most engaged when they have the opportunity to experience science for themselves. They are curious about the living world, and some of our best classroom moments happen when students can investigate something, make their own observations, and see concepts from class come to life.

Microscopes are an essential part of those experiences, but many of the microscopes currently in my classroom have served students for decades.

Some are more than 50 years old, and many have become damaged beyond repair. This leaves fewer working microscopes for students to share during laboratory investigations.

**These two new compound binocular microscopes will put reliable scientific tools into students' hands and give more of them the opportunity to investigate the microscopic world firsthand.**

Students will use the microscopes to prepare and examine slides, observe cells and microorganisms, identify cellular structures, compare specimens, and collect evidence from their observations. Instead of only seeing cells in diagrams or on a screen, they will be able to observe the structures and organisms we study for themselves.

Adding two dependable microscopes will mean less time spent waiting for equipment to work and more time spent observing, questioning, analyzing, and discovering. These microscopes will support hands-on investigations for many classes to come while helping my students develop the observation, data analysis, and scientific reasoning skills that are at the heart of doing science.
