Print the Story: Bringing Literature to Life in 3D

Help me give my students a 3D printer and filament so they can take what they read off the page and turn their ideas, interpretations, and understanding of literature into something they can actually hold.

My Project

I teach 7th grade ELA in a small, rural K-12 school in eastern North Carolina. My students have a wide range of reading abilities, interests, and learning styles. Some will happily sit down and write about a story, while others need something more hands-on to really get involved. Middle school students are creative, and sometimes they understand much more than they are willing or able to show on yet another worksheet. I am always looking for new ways for them to show what they know while still keeping reading, writing, and thinking at the center of what we do.

A 3D printer may not be the first thing that comes to mind when I say I teach English Language Arts, but that is what makes this project unique and exciting.

I want my students to take literature beyond the page. After reading a story or novel, students could design an object that represents a character, an important symbol, part of the setting, or even a solution to a problem a character faces. The 3D printer would allow them to turn that idea into something real.

Students will also have to explain what they created and why, using details and evidence from the text to defend their choices. Their creations could be displayed with written museum-style descriptions. The printer will give students another choice for book projects and reading assignments throughout the year and can be used again and again with different stories and classes.

My goal is not just for students to make something cool. I want them to read it, understand it, design it, build it, and prove why their idea belongs in the story. That is reading comprehension they can actually hold in their hands.
