My Project

My first grade classroom is an inclusive learning community where scholars have different strengths, needs, interests, and ways of learning. As we begin our year together, I am learning more about what helps each scholar feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to learn.

For some of my scholars with autism and other unique learning and behavioral needs, the traditional classroom environment does not always provide everything they need to successfully participate throughout the school day.

We are discovering what works through observation, collaboration, consistency, and trying different supports.

This project will provide sensory tools, alternative spaces, visual supports, preferred learning materials, and positive reinforcement. A sensory tent will provide an alternative space when traditional seating is not meeting a scholar’s needs. Noise reducing earmuffs, weighted sensory items, a visual timer, and sensory materials will provide additional options for regulation and transitions.

We have also discovered that one scholar is highly engaged by flashcards and enjoys sorting and interacting with them. I want to build upon this interest as a bridge to learning and engagement. Another scholar loves Paw Patrol, so preferred character items can help support motivation and positive redirection.

Snacks and treats will support positive reinforcement for skills such as following routines, completing tasks, transitioning successfully, making safe choices, and participating in learning.

We are still learning what works best for our scholars. These resources will give us more tools to respond to individual needs while teaching our entire class patience, flexibility, kindness, and inclusion. Our goal is simple: create a classroom where every scholar has the support they need to learn, belong, and thrive.
