Hands-On Learning: Making Learning Visible

Help me give my students hands-on and magnetic manipulatives that make abstract skills more concrete, visual, and accessible, especially for my visual learners and students with special learning needs.

My Project

I love how curious, funny, and eager my students can be when they are given the opportunity to learn in a way that works for them. I have students who understand a skill much better when they can actually see it and work with it instead of only hearing an explanation or completing a worksheet. I am requesting magnetic manipulatives and other hands-on materials that I can use to model skills for the entire class and then allow students to use during guided and independent practice. The magnetic materials will make it easier for me to demonstrate steps and examples where all students can see them, while the hands-on manipulatives will give students a chance to physically work through problems and show what they know.

These materials will also help create a more focused learning environment because students will have something meaningful to do while they are learning and practicing a skill.

Instead of becoming frustrated when a concept is difficult, students can use the manipulatives to break the skill down and work through it step by step. This is especially important for my visual learners and students with special learning needs, who often benefit from having something concrete to look at and interact with. My goal is to make learning feel less intimidating and give my students more than one way to understand a new concept. With these resources, I can make my lessons more interactive while helping my students build confidence and become more independent learners.
