Growing a Legacy: Learning Through the Garden

Help me give my students in 5th grade: a raised garden bed, greenhouse, seeds, and gardening tools to create a hands-on outdoor science classroom.

My Project

My fifth graders are curious, energetic learners who thrive when science moves beyond the pages of a textbook. With a raised garden bed, greenhouse, seeds, soil, tools, and other gardening supplies, my students will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and watch the science we study come to life.

I hope to turn my dad’s love of gardening into a living legacy of learning for my students.

I recently lost my dad after his battle with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. His garden was his pride and joy. He spent countless hours planting, tending, and caring for it, and I would love to share a small piece of something that brought him so much happiness with my students.

Our garden will become a hands-on science laboratory. Students will plant and care for their own plants while investigating concepts directly connected to our fifth-grade science standards, including ecosystems, producers, habitats, populations, and biotic and abiotic factors. They will observe how sunlight, water, soil, weather, insects, and other environmental factors affect the organisms within our garden. We can also use our plants to observe transpiration and connect what students see to our study of the water cycle.

More than anything, I hope this garden teaches my students the same lesson my dad’s garden represented so beautifully: with time, patience, and care, amazing things can grow.
