Rooted in Reading: Bringing Word Origins to Fourth Grade

Help me give my students Word Origins that is a word study program that strengthens students' reading, writing, spelling, and vocabulary by teaching the structure and origins of English words.

My Project

Our fourth-grade students are curious, hardworking learners who thrive when they discover connections and understand the "why" behind what they are learning. They come to the classroom with a wide range of reading abilities and vocabulary knowledge, and many benefit from explicit instruction that helps them recognize patterns in words instead of simply memorizing them.

The Word Origins program will provide students with a research-based approach to word study by teaching Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, suffixes, and the history of English words.

As students learn how words are built, they will strengthen their reading comprehension, spelling, writing, and vocabulary. Rather than viewing unfamiliar words as obstacles, they will develop the confidence and strategies to decode and understand new academic vocabulary across all subject areas.

This resource will help create engaging, meaningful lessons that encourage students to become word detectives. By exploring the origins and structure of words, students will improve their literacy skills while building the confidence needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Investing in this program is an investment in lifelong readers and learners who will carry these skills with them throughout their educational journey.
