Shelf Help: Bringing Books Front and Center

Help me give my students an inviting library where books are displayed front-facing in large, colorful baskets so every child can easily discover exciting new stories, explore different genres, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

My Project

In my elementary library, the cover of a book is often what sparks my students' curiosity. Unfortunately, many wonderful books are hidden on traditional spine-out shelves, making them difficult for young readers to find. My K-5 students love to read, and they deserve a 21st Century Learning Library that encourages exploration and helps every child find books they are excited to read.

My "Shelf Help" project will transform sections of our library into front-facing displays that showcase colorful, engaging book covers.

Front-facing shelving will make browsing easier for beginning readers, multilingual learners, and students who may not yet know the titles or authors they enjoy. Instead of searching through rows of book spines, students will be inspired by engaging displays that invite them to explore new topics, discover diverse characters, and take risks with their reading choices.

By creating a more welcoming and accessible library, this project will encourage independent book selection, increase book circulation, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading among my students. A simple change in how books are displayed can have a lasting impact on helping children become confident, enthusiastic readers.
