Read Alouds in Their Hands! Part 1

Help me give my students physical copies of books we will read in social studies and ELA!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, some of our most meaningful learning happens when we gather together with a great book. Many of the titles we read aloud are high-quality nonfiction books that introduce students to the people, places, traditions, and events they explore through our English Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum. These books help young learners ask questions, make connections, build background knowledge, and discover that reading is one of the best ways to learn about the world.

Although we have digital copies that can be projected on our classroom monitor, nothing compares to holding the very same book your teacher just read aloud.

There is something special about turning the pages yourself, lingering over the photographs and illustrations, rereading an interesting fact, or sharing a favorite page with a friend. A physical book invites curiosity in a way that a screen simply cannot.

This project will provide additional copies of the nonfiction and mentor texts we use during whole-group instruction so students can continue exploring them independently. I can already picture students racing to check them out, eagerly recommending favorites to friends, and proudly reading familiar stories on their own. Having access to these beloved books will encourage repeated reading, strengthen confidence, and help transform emerging readers into lifelong book lovers.

Repeated exposure to these books strengthens reading fluency, expands vocabulary, and deepens comprehension while building students' confidence as readers. Just as importantly, it encourages children to see nonfiction as exciting, engaging, and full of discoveries waiting to be made.

Your generosity will help transform our classroom library into a place where students don't just listen to great books—they get to hold them, revisit them, and make them their own.
