Passive Readers to Active Learners: Building an Interactive ELA Classroom

Help me give my students interactive, reusable resources that engage 147 students, fosters collaboration and critical thinking, and inspires a lifelong love of reading.

My Project

Every day, 147 middle school students walk into my classroom with different strengths, interests, and learning needs. As the teacher of nearly 150 students at a Title I school, my goal is to create an engaging classroom where every child can build confidence as a reader, writer, and critical thinker.

While our required curriculum provides the foundation for instruction, these resources will transform lessons into interactive experiences.

Students will annotate texts, investigate themes, collaborate with classmates, and demonstrate their thinking through hands-on learning.

Dry-erase boards, reusable sleeves, markers, and clipboards will allow students to analyze passages, respond to questions, and participate in collaborative activities without fear of making mistakes. These reusable tools encourage discussion, participation, and reduce the need for paper copies.

A laminator, laminating pouches, and a guillotine paper cutter will help me create durable instructional materials that can be reused for years. Hero's Journey trackers, evidence logs, vocabulary games, character profiles, task cards, and station activities will become lasting resources benefiting hundreds of students.

Storage bins and a mobile teacher workstation will keep materials organized for four class periods, maximizing instructional time.

A class set of headphones will provide equitable access to digital texts, read-aloud accommodations, educational videos, and independent learning. A large classroom timer will help students manage transitions, stay on task, and build independence.

These resources are more than classroom supplies. They are tools that foster collaboration, critical thinking, and literacy skills extending beyond the classroom.
