Dissecting the Rhetoric of Fear: 'The Crucible' in AP Language

Help me give my students a classroom set (30 copies) of 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller.

My Project

This project will implement a rigorous rhetorical analysis unit in an Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course. The unit study treats Miller's play as a masterclass in persuasion, manipulation, and political rhetoric, shifting the focus from what a text means to how a text functions.

By analyzing the text through the rhetorical lens, students will analyze how language is weaponized to construct authority, induce mass hysteria, and defend individual integrity against institutional power.

These skills directly align with the AP Language curriculum and the synthesis/rhetorical analysis demands of the exam.

'The Crucible' also serves as a bridge between historical American rhetoric and contemporary political discourse. Students will track logical fallacies, including ad hominem attacks, slippery slope arguments, and false dilemmas to shift blame and manufacture guilt. They will examine how characters manipulate their ethos, appeal to pathos, and distort logos, depending on their audience. Finally, students will evaluate Miller's use of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials as a political allegory to critique the 1950s McCarthyite Red Scare.
