Because of you, I was able to implement a deep, collaborative study of the Holocaust, centered on Elie Wiesel's memoir 'Night'.\r\n\r\nMy teaching objective was to move beyond surface-level reading and closely examine the complexities that 'Night' raises, questions about humanity, inhumanity, and the choices people make under unimaginable duress. This study would not have been possible without your funding. \r\n\r\nThis study also enabled us to delve into a deeper literary analysis. Students collaboratively discussed, debated, and reflected on acts of kindness, cruelty, selfishness, and unselfishness. They also charted and analyzed Wiesel's use of language. \r\n\r\nTeaching the Holocaust to high schoolers is a necessary responsibility. As one student, Skylah, noted, \"We have to study the dark periods of history so we don't make the same mistakes.\"","fullyFundedDate":1749505434932,"projectUrl":"project/never-forget-preserving-holocaust-histo/9398751/","projectTitle":"Never Forget: Preserving Holocaust History With Memoir","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Edwards","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1958015_orig.jpg?crop=858,858,x91,y209&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749222697199","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1958015"},{"teacherId":7988800,"projectId":8484992,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, my students have been diving into reading comprehension games and activities with newfound enthusiasm! When the materials first arrived, their excitement was contagious—they couldn't wait to explore the colorful, interactive games and start using the new resources in our small groups. One moment that stands out was during a comprehension game focused on identifying the main idea: students were so engaged that they cheered each other on, turning what used to feel like \"hard work\" into a team effort. Seeing them smile and laugh while practicing critical thinking skills was a testament to how these resources are transforming their learning experience.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating options have also made a noticeable difference. Students love choosing their preferred spots during reading time, which has created a more comfortable and focused learning environment. One student shared, \"It feels like I'm reading at home!\" This shift has encouraged reluctant readers to pick up books more willingly, and the improved engagement is evident in both their participation and comprehension. Additionally, the SEL and current events magazines have sparked meaningful class discussions. For instance, after reading about a sports hero's challenges and triumphs, students connected the story to their own goals, sharing personal reflections that deepened our classroom bond.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we'll continue integrating these resources into our lessons, particularly in collaborative projects. Students are beginning to apply their comprehension skills to analyze real-world issues presented in the magazines, such as environmental conservation and community activism. These activities help bridge the gap between academic content and the world outside our classroom, preparing students to be critical thinkers and informed citizens. None of this would have been possible without your support, and we are so grateful for the opportunities you've provided to make learning engaging and impactful for every child in our classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1723468113079,"projectUrl":"project/teach-me-about-my-world/8484992/","projectTitle":"Teach Me About My World","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thomas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7988800_orig.png?crop=406,406,x11,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1642446671445","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/teacherthomasinthird"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3624","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1132,"numTeachers":73,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":51,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.7,"schoolId":3624,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Charles B Aycock High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Charles B Aycock High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wayne-county-public-schools/charles-b-aycock-high-school/3624"}
