Students will have the opportunity all year to read various non-fiction pieces that highlight problems in our society today. Even if the books relate to the past, students will be able to see either the growth of our country and ideologies or the lack there of. Because students are becoming more aware of their own cultures and communities, they need to be able to read about others so that they can create their own ideas - instead of just taking the ideas of others as their own. Students can and need to create their own opinions. And reading will help build their confidence on standing up for their own rights and beliefs.
