Building Mathematical Thinkers Through Math Talk

Help me give my students hands-on math tools that will help them understand math word problems, explain their thinking, and build confidence in mathematics.

My Project

At our Elementary School in Holly Springs, NC, our second and third grade students are learning to solve increasingly complex math word problems. To strengthen their understanding, we are implementing the Structure of Equality Math Talk approach, which helps students use discussion, modeling, and hands-on learning to make sense of mathematical relationships.

To support this work, we are requesting class sets of dry-erase sentence strips, dry-erase markers, dry-erase erasers, and zipper storage bags for 14 classrooms.

These tools will allow students to build, model, and explain their mathematical thinking while working through word problems.

Hands-on materials help students visualize math concepts and participate in meaningful math conversations. By using these resources, students can better understand what a word problem is asking, communicate their reasoning, and develop stronger problem-solving skills. Your support will help create engaging math experiences that lead to increased confidence and growth in mathematics. Thank you for helping our students become successful mathematical thinkers!
