A Thermometer in Every Home

Help me give my students access to basic health tools at home, one thermometer at a time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our K–8 school in Old East Durham, we serve about 650 students, over 87% of whom come from low-income households. Many of our families face barriers to accessing basic health supplies, including thermometers. While thermometers may seem like a simple item, they are an important tool that helps families monitor illness, make informed decisions about seeking medical care, and determine when it is safe for a child to return to school.

Healthy students are better able to attend school consistently, focus in class, and fully participate in learning.

When families do not have access to a thermometer, it can be difficult to determine whether a child needs medical attention. This can lead to students missing unnecessary days of school, attending school while sick, or parents feeling unsure about how to care for their child at home. By providing thermometers to families in need, we can help remove a small but significant barrier to student health and attendance.

The goal of this project is to provide thermometers to families who may not otherwise have access to one at home. These thermometers will be distributed by the school nurse to families identified as having a need. In addition to receiving a thermometer, families will be provided with information about fever management and school attendance guidelines.

What makes our students special is their resilience, diversity, and determination. Our student body includes a large population of English language learners and students from historically underserved communities. Despite the challenges many of our families face, our students arrive each day eager to learn, grow, and pursue their goals. This project will help support their success by giving families a basic health tool that many of us take for granted but that can make a meaningful difference in a child's well-being.
