Scholars will have the opportunity to experience the hatching of baby chicks in the classroom. This project allows students to follow the growth of chickens inside the eggs, learn the parts of the egg and baby chick, and care for them after hatching. The microscope has allowed the students hands-on experience that makes science feel real and interesting to them. Both teaching students how to operate the microscope (zooming in and out and adjusting the slide, etc.) and seeing their excitement grow as the specimen gets clearer has been so joyful as a teacher. \r\n\r\nMost recently we have put the microscope to use during our project-based learning seminar during which students study the rainforest and create their own children's books for 3 weeks. To learn more about forests, we visited a site in Chapel Hill where students had the opportunity to collect their own water samples and identify microorganisms using the microscope.
