My Project

Our school is in need of a "Top Notch," 3D printer. We are aware that there are cheaper options for a 3D printer, but we want our students to be able to create, print and engineer on a solid, consistent system. We currently have one 3D printer, but it was gifted to us and makes only simple items and is broken more than it's working. We would love to have something for our students that works with the newest technology.

Our goal for the project is to have our students working with 21st century technology, with a product that they know is the best.

Because of our school demographics, our students don't often get the best of the best. We are a computer science, STEM public Title I school. Our students are smart and motivated but we are often working with hand-me-down materials. I want students to see this 3D printer and know they can work with the newest technology and create amazing projects.

Students in K-2 work through the "Creation Process," and design something on paper. They then take that paper and use clay to model their design for printing. Myself, the science teacher or STEM teacher then create their design and print it for them. In 3-5 students use an online computer program to create 3D objects that can then be directly uploaded to the current 3D printer we have. The problem is: the printer is often broken, needs new parts, and only prints in one color.

This new printer will motivate students to want to do more with their design process and make more detailed projects with all the new features this printer can offer.
