My Project

Students at BES thrive when they have support in place to help them be successful in the classroom. The student support team is working to ensure that students are equipped with tools and strategies that support stress, breathing techniques and sensory needs.

The goal of this project is to provide every teacher and classroom with designated areas for students to take a moment to pause with a calming kit.

The peaceful pause place will ensure that students have what they need when they start to experience strong emotions develop in their body. The items provided in the calm kit teach students to reset their nervous system before a meltdown occurs. As a school we are working to teach students self-regulation strategies that will help decrease physical aggression office referrals.

Students will be taught self-management skills on how to regulate their own emotions when they start to feel overwhelmed in the classroom. Having a designated area in the classroom for students will allow them to take a 5–10 minute break to reset and then rejoin the class once they are regulated which will result in them staying in the classroom and not miss out on vital instruction. Staff and students will receive whole group practice on how to utilize the materials provided in the peace place kits. Students and staff will utilize the calming strategies and posters provided in the tool kit to learn how to identify feelings and emotions when they start to become dysregulated in the classroom.

Our school-wide initiative will give students safe choices on how to soothe themselves by building their confidence and helping them to develop a sense of personal control through self-monitoring devices.
