My Project

The texts in this project fill a critical curriculum gap for our ML students at my school. They provide comprehensible input in English, which allows students' language skills to advance by being challenged with engaging content. My students in this class are all multilingual and bring different, valuable experiences to the classroom. The graphic novels When Stars Are Scattered and They Called Us Enemy are novels that reflect some of the experiences students have had in their journeys to the United States. Both novels are modern and relevant to students' lived experiences. Both novels provide a way to engage social-emotional skills, literacy skills, and critical thinking skills.

The Saddleback Hi-Lo Teen books provide texts that have new and appropriate vocabulary for newcomer and experienced ML students.

These texts are modern, written at an appropriate level, and contain vocabulary for students to practice and use. In addition, they will be used for a choice-based reading project where students select a book from the set of their choice and work through the book. Eventually, they will report on what they have learned to their peers.

The two graphic novels will be used across two different quarters as a book study. Students will use the graphic novels to improve their reading comprehension, inference, and critical thinking skills. All three resources will be used for multiple years and have an impact on hundreds of students to come. All three resources are provided in English as they can be used by all students regardless of language background.
