Walking in Their Shoes: Building Cultural Empathy Through Prisoner B-3087

Help me give my students a class set of Prisoner B-3087 to support our Holocaust unit by helping them understand historical events through a personal story and build cultural empathy by seeing the human impact of history.

My Project

I teach 7th and 8th grade social studies, and I love how curious, thoughtful, and willing my students are to engage with challenging topics. They do their best learning when they can connect history to real people and real stories, not just memorize facts and dates.

This project will provide a class set of Prisoner B-3087, which we will use during our Holocaust unit.

This novel helps students experience history through the eyes of a young boy trying to survive one of the darkest periods in history. By following his story, students will better understand the human impact of the Holocaust and develop cultural empathy by seeing historical events from a personal perspective.

With these books, students will participate in close reading, discussion, and reflection activities that help them think deeply about resilience, perspective, and the importance of remembering history. Instead of only learning about events, they will connect to the experiences of individuals who lived through them.

Overall, this resource will help my students grow as readers, critical thinkers, and empathetic individuals while strengthening their understanding of our Holocaust unit.
