The first day we used them, they immediately wanted to start creating colorful visuals for our history lessons. I remember one group enthusiastically designing a timeline of the Crusades on a poster board, using the markers to highlight causes, effects, and legacies. Seeing their ideas come to life in bright colors made the lesson more engaging and allowed students to organize their thoughts in a creative and collaborative way.\r\n\r\nThe students' reaction was wonderful—they were excited, curious, and couldn't wait to use the materials for other projects. Many students shared that they felt more motivated and inspired to participate because they could contribute to a visual representation of what they were learning. Even my quieter students found it easier to express their ideas when they had markers and poster boards to illustrate their points, which has made our classroom discussions more dynamic and inclusive.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are using the whiteboard markers and poster boards for upcoming projects on European history, including analyzing primary sources and creating interactive group presentations. These materials have allowed me to expand my teaching strategies, encourage student creativity, and make learning more hands-on. Thanks to your support, my students now have the tools to engage deeply with the content while having fun and collaborating with their peers.","fullyFundedDate":1756162715260,"projectUrl":"project/collaborate-and-create/9572909/","projectTitle":"Collaborate and Create","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lydia Surprenant","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6538984_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722886916781","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lydia-surprenant"},{"teacherId":6538984,"projectId":9047162,"letterContent":"When our surf desks arrived, my students were immediately curious and excited. The very first day, several of them asked if they could use the desks during group work and independent reading time. What I loved most was watching even my quieter students eagerly grab a surf desk and settle into their own space to focus. One student even told me, \"This makes learning so much easier—I can finally spread out my notes without worrying about the table being too crowded!\" Moments like that showed me how impactful these resources are.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the surf desks during collaborative projects on the Middle Ages, where students rotate through different roles like kings, nobles, and peasants. Instead of feeling cramped at their group tables, students now spread out with their surf desks to record notes, create timelines, or sketch visuals for their posters. It has given them more freedom and ownership of their learning, which has been wonderful to see.\r\n\r\nWhen the desks were first unboxed, the reaction was priceless—students gasped, clapped, and couldn't wait to try them out. They loved the idea that learning doesn't have to be tied to a traditional desk or chair, and it has made our classroom feel more flexible and welcoming.\r\n\r\nOur next step is diving into our Crusades project. Students will be researching causes, effects, and the lasting impact of different Crusades, then creating posters to share with their classmates. The surf desks will allow them to move around the room and collaborate more effectively without being stuck in one place. I'm so grateful that my students now have tools that not only support their learning but also make them excited to come into class each day.","fullyFundedDate":1746785772660,"projectUrl":"project/history-on-the-move-portable-desks-for/9047162/","projectTitle":"History on the Move: Portable Desks for Social Studies Adventures","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lydia Surprenant","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6538984_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722886916781","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lydia-surprenant"},{"teacherId":6538984,"projectId":9051898,"letterContent":"When our cheer essentials bag arrived, my team was so excited to see everything inside—hair ties, bobby pins, tape, snacks, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and more. It might seem simple, but to them it meant so much to know they had what they needed in case of an emergency. The first time someone forgot a hair tie before a performance, they went straight to the bag, and you could just see the relief on their face. Having these items available has given my cheerleaders a sense of security and confidence, knowing they don't have to stress if they forget something or need a quick fix. It's brought them peace of mind and helped them focus more on performing and supporting one another. The next step for my team is continuing to prepare for games and pep rallies, and now they can do it with one less worry, thanks to the kindness of our donors.","fullyFundedDate":1739055144511,"projectUrl":"project/ready-set-cheer-essentials-for-confid/9051898/","projectTitle":"Ready, Set, Cheer: Essentials for Confidence and Care!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lydia Surprenant","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6538984_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722886916781","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lydia-surprenant"},{"teacherId":6538984,"projectId":8947140,"letterContent":"I'm so excited to share the impact your generous contribution has had on my classroom and my students. The portable lap desks you helped provide have truly transformed the learning environment in ways that I never anticipated.\r\n\r\nOne of the first projects we used the desks for was a group project where students researched different historical figures. They loved the flexibility to move around the room or even take their work outdoors. It created a sense of ownership over their learning spaces, and they were more focused, collaborative, and creative than I've ever seen them. The ability to sit in different places, whether it was in a cozy corner of the room or under a tree outside, gave them the space to think and work in a way that suited their individual learning styles. The desks were a huge hit with the class, and they immediately felt more comfortable and at ease.\r\n\r\nAs soon as my students saw the lap desks, their eyes lit up! They were eager to explore new spots in the classroom, and I noticed that some students who typically struggle with focus thrived in these more dynamic settings. The desks allowed them to engage in the lesson while moving around, which is something I didn't have before.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're currently diving into a new project where my students are creating presentations on various historical events. Thanks to the lap desks, they are collaborating with more ease, researching in different areas, and brainstorming in creative ways. I'm excited to see how the desks continue to support their growth as they explore new topics and engage in group discussions.\r\n\r\nYour support has not only made learning more flexible but has also helped my students feel more valued and inspired to take ownership of their education. Thank you for helping create a space where each student can succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1734758865452,"projectUrl":"project/history-on-the-move-portable-desks-for/8947140/","projectTitle":"History on the Move: Portable Desks for Social Studies Adventures","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lydia Surprenant","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6538984_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722886916781","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lydia-surprenant"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2575","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":437,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":2575,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Currituck County Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Currituck County Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/currituck-county-school-district/currituck-co-middle-school/2575"}
