My Project

I teach kindergarten at a rural, Title One, low-income school where more than half of our students live in poverty, come from low-income areas, and receive free lunch. At our school, lower elementary classrooms have not received new furniture in over a decade. The tables and chairs we currently have are outdated, uncomfortable, mismatched, partially broken, and no longer meet the needs of today’s young learners, at our school lower elementary classrooms have not received new furniture in over a decade.

This project will provide my kindergartners with new, safe, comfortable, age-appropriate tables and seating that will help create a classroom where they can feel cared for, valued, and ready to learn.

I want every student who enters my classroom to know they are worthy of the very best. Many of my students carry worries with them that no child should have to carry, and I want our classroom to be a place where they can leave those worries at the door, even just for the school day.

This project will also include a light table, which will give my students a hands-on learning experience they may not normally have access to in a school like ours. Kindergarten students learn best by touching, building, moving, exploring, and creating — not just by sitting and listening all day. A light table will allow them to practice letters, numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, fine motor skills, and problem-solving in an exciting and engaging way.

I love every student I teach, and I work hard to give them the best I possibly can. These materials will not only benefit my current class, but also many kindergarten students for years to come.
