My Project

My 7th grade ELA/Social Studies students would benefit greatly from a class set of *When Stars Are Scattered* by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed. This graphic novel gives students the opportunity to explore important topics such as refugees, conflict, education, resilience, and human rights through a story that is engaging and accessible for middle school readers.

In our classroom, students connect literature with the historical and global topics we study in Social Studies and English Language Arts .

This text will allow students to strengthen literacy skills such as analyzing theme, citing evidence, and understanding perspective while also making meaningful real-world connections. The graphic novel format also helps support struggling readers while still providing rigorous discussion opportunities for all students.

Most importantly, this book encourages empathy and helps students better understand experiences outside of their own while building stronger readers, writers, and global citizens.
