This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every day, I ask my students questions like, “How do you know?” and “Can you prove it?” While many students understand math, not all feel confident enough to share their thinking out loud. Some speak so quietly that their ideas are never fully heard. Others hesitate, unsure if their voice matters.

In my 5th grade classroom, my students are not just learning math, they are learning how to explain their thinking, defend their reasoning, and build confidence in their voices.

But in math, their voice matters just as much as the answer.

I want to change that.

With portable microphones and a tripod stand, my classroom will transform into a space where students can:

• Record math explanations using strategies like area models and volume reasoning

• Present solutions clearly to their peers

• Engage in “math talks” where every voice is heard

• Build confidence in speaking, listening, and reasoning

Imagine a student solving a complex problem and confidently saying, “Let me show you how I know.” With a microphone in hand and a recording setup, that moment becomes powerful—not just for them, but for the entire class.

These tools will also allow students to create short video explanations of their thinking. This supports deeper understanding and allows me to assess not just what they know, but how they think.

For my shy students and English language learners, this is a gamechanger. A microphone doesn’t just amplify sound, it amplifies confidence.
