From Planks to Possibilities

My Project

Walk into my classroom and you’ll see students who are curious, collaborative, and constantly asking “what if?”

This project will bring that curiosity to life through hands-on STEM learning with KEVA planks.

With a class set of 800 planks, my students will be able to design, test, and refine structures, from simple towers to more complex marble runs, while exploring real engineering concepts in a way that feels like play.

Right now, many of my students have limited access to open-ended building materials. When we do STEM activities, I see the same thing happen every time. Students light up. They begin to problem-solve, work together, and think critically without even realizing it. The challenge is that we don’t have enough materials for this kind of learning to happen consistently.

KEVA planks are especially powerful because they don’t rely on glue or connectors. Students have to rely on balance, planning, and persistence. They will build structures that can withstand movement, create bridges that hold weight, and design marble runs that demonstrate force and motion. These experiences naturally connect to science and math standards while also building collaboration, creativity, and perseverance.

I’ve watched even my most hesitant learners find their footing during building challenges. One student quietly rebuilt a collapsing structure again and again until it finally stood. When it did, they looked up and said, “I didn’t give up this time.” That moment mattered far beyond the lesson.
