This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My fifth grade students are inner city children that are first and second generation, many of which are English language learners. They have limited experiences in physical science and are required to understand the periodic table of elements by the end of the school year. I would like to bring the periodic table to the real world and provide them with an opportunity to use the scientific process to explore and make sound judgments based on their experiences. The students will experiment and explore the density of the elements while comparing the congruent shapes, which are provided in the density cube set. These cubes look similar, but the density varies due to the atomic structure, which is another standard the students must master by the end of 5th grade. I will be able to reuse these resources and share them with other classes at my school. There is nothing more powerful then seeing with your own eyes that the same shape cube will either float or sink based on its atomic structure, which will in turn boost their scientific knowledge and help motivate them to become scientists. Students will then use the cubes to demonstrate their knowledge to their 3rd grade buddies.
