Handwriting Without Tears

My project needs the Handwriting without Tears capital letter set that includes wooden pieces to create letters; three stamp and see magnadoodles and roll-a-dough trays; and a book of fun handwriting activity ideas.

Imagine the joy a child feels when she writes her name for the first time. Now imagine the frustration a child feels when he is unable to write at all, or his handwriting is so messy no one can read it. I am a special education teacher and I am requesting materials to teach writing skills to my students. The materials I am requesting are part of a multi-sensory handwriting program developed by an occupational therapist. The program teaches students not only good writing skills but other important social, motor, and academic skills. The younger students learn position words, manners, shapes, and letters. The older students learn phonics and grammar. I am requesting wooden letter pieces, instructional cards, mats and roll-a-dough trays that the students can use to build capital letters. By building a letter they not only learn the correct way to write the letter but its name and sound as well. Once the students learn the capital letters they serve as anchors helping them learn the lower case letters faster. I am also requesting specially designed magnadoodles that have letter piece stamps and a special pen for writing. Children with special needs require the kind of fun, hands-on, and multi-sensory learning that this program can provide. I received some of these handwriting materials from DonorsChoose.org several years ago and have been incredibly successful using them. However my class has grown and some of the materials have been consumed. This proposal allows my current and future students access to the same great handwriting instruction. Most of the materials are reusable from year to year increasing the impact of your donation. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
