My Students
Plato once said "The life of man in every part has need of harmony and rhythm." My students love to make music and express themselves through rhythm and movement, but we need your help!
I teach in a rural school district and see nearly 450 students in Kindergarten through 6th grades.
Community members often feel isolated as they must drive 20 minutes to the nearest town to buy groceries and other necessities. The community offers no local fine arts performance opportunities or musical venues. Students must travel over an hour and a half for cultural events like concerts and art museums. For most students the only opportunity they have to interact with musical instruments is at school.
My Project
Your donation to this project will provide needed percussion instruments. Classroom rhythm instruments like claves, rhythm sticks, woodblocks and special percussion tubes called Boomwhackers will add depth to student music making experiences and give them a hands-on feel (literally!) for music making.
These instruments will be used to accompany singing and dancing activities. They will also be used in community music making experiences like drum circles. Drum circles give students the opportunity to improvise and create with their classmates in a very personal way. These experiences teach cooperation, coordination and problem solving skills.
