Powerful Books for Powerful Kids

My students need 4 copies each of 17 "Rotten School Series" books by R.L. Stine.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our kids are the best! They have so much promise and potential. Our investment in them is paying off and they are making serious gains. One problem we are facing is that we never have enough good books for them. We don't have a school library and we need more books to keep our students on the path.

We are located in the South Bronx which is ground-zero for childhood poverty.

Many of our students and their families cannot afford to buy books even in the best economic times. In these tough economic times things are even worse. Our school budget has been cut for three consecutive years, and books are starting to dwindle. This is why I have written this grant to you. We need your help to get these books and help our students progress to higher reading levels. We use the Reader's Workshop model from Columbia Teacher's College. What that means is that each student is expected to read a book at his or her reading level. To accomplish this task we must at all times have a variety of interesting books at a variety of reading levels. The books I have carefully chosen for this grant would help our classroom library to meet these goals. These books would immediately be used by students to improve their reading comprehension.

My Project

Our students have been begging me to get them interesting on-level books to read. We teach strategies for how to think deeper about a text you are reading. These strategies are significantly more effective if the book is right for you. These books will be right for many of our kids. They will be used by our students for an hour a day of independent reading. The books I have selected for this grant involve characters who overcome personal struggles to reach success. This kind of message is so important for our students. It inspires them to overcome their own personal struggles with poverty and neighborhood violence. The "Rotten School" series by R.L. Stine is an hilarious and dramatic coming-of-age series about kids at school. The main characters struggle with bullying and other school-age problems. Our students go crazy for these books! Please help us get these powerful books into our awesome kids' hands.

I have bought numerous books on my own, but a teacher's salary doesn't give enough room for the kind of philanthropy that our kids desperately need.

Please help us by providing these essential resources for our wonderful students! We thank you for your continuing support for our cause. Education is one of the great needs of our time. We appreciate your help. The betterment of our students is the betterment of our world. Thank you and God bless!
